JUNE 1914 - FAREWELLS & WORK


Monday 1st

I, Florrie & Ethel took train to Millers Dale & then walked along the riverside into Buxton. A lovely walk. Am glad I decided upon it. We all enjoyed it. Left Buxton at 7 o’clock. Fine day.

Tuesday 2nd

Paid my farewell visits & left Romiley at 10 to 4. St Pancras ½ past 9. Had a most enjoyable time.

Wednesday 3rd

Started work again. Worked until 7 o’clock. Lovely day.

Thursday 4th

Worked until 7 o’clock again. Lovely day.

Friday 5th

No overtime tonight. Very dull day. Some rain.

Saturday 6th

Short week this week. Went down & saw Ern play cricket. He made 53. Saw B Arnold. After tea went round the club with Ern. Home at 1 o’clock. Another dull day.

Sunday 7th

Did not get up until about 12 o’clock. Went out after tea but had not gone far before it came on to rain. So came back & wrote to B Powton.

Monday 8th

Working until 7 o’clock again. Rained

Tuesday 9th

Worked until 7 o’clock. Thunderstorm. 76F P Outside 4 ½

Wednesday 10th

76F P Outside 9. Charlie started work to day.

Thursday 11th

Friday 12th

Flo paid us a visit. 75E P O8 ½

Saturday 13th

75E P O 1hr 76G P O4 Branch meeting to night. I went. Not much doing. Uncle John paid us a visit.

Sunday 14th

Storm in the morning but turned out lovely later. Went down to A. Allen’s. Had tea there & then a walk round the Downhills. Severe storm over W London. 6 killed by lightning 4 Children.

Monday 15th

Tuesday 16th

Colder to day. 76H Painting Outside 9 hrs

Wednesday 17th

Florrie’s Birthday 76H Painting Outside 7 ½ 76I Painting Outside 1 ½ Very hot today.

Thursday 18th

76I Painting Outside 9 Another hot day

Friday 19th

Painting Outside 76I 5 ½ hrs. 75E painting cupboards 3 ½ hrs. Thunderstorm. Alf & Doyle went back to the flats this morning.

Saturday 20th

Drafted over to A. Hanwell’s side this morning. Met Will this afternoon 7 we went to the Anglo-American Exhibition. Quite enjoyed ourselves. Went up the Flip Flap & on the Scenic Railway. Spent about 2 ½ hrs in Bostocks Jungle & saw the Animals performing. Was very good. Did not see half what there is to be seen. Lovely day.

Sunday 21st

Rained first thing they tell me. I did not go out until after tea. But spent the afternoon in sleeping. Went out over P.H.F. after tea & heard the band play. Not up to much. Turned out a lovely day.

Monday 22nd

Work again. Lovely day.

Tuesday 23rd

Begin to long for holidays now we have such lovely weather.

Wednesday 24th

Lovely day. Alexandra’s Day. Wild Roses to the front. Big lot came up. Called on Alf Franklin. He has been queer.

Thursday 25th

Lovely day.

Friday 26th

Lovely day

Saturday 27th

Finished with Alf Hanwell today. Branch meeting. I went & squared up

Sunday 28th

Called on G Davis at Parson’s Green. Had tea there. Had a short walk in the evening. Lovely sunset. Very hot day.

Monday 29th

Back to my old side of the street to day. Very hot. 128 in the sun. Started Painting in B76 G 9 hrs

Tuesday 30th

Still keeps hot
